Here are some short and long-term hints for maintaining your spinal health following an adjustment in Northbrook

In the first 48 hours:

  1. AVOID strenuous workouts, activities, and sports; walking is recommended.
  2. Be sure to arrange your schedule to include REST.
  3. NO massage should be performed on your neck and shoulders.
  4. AVOID extending your head and neck backward, or any situations that cause the head to move quickly in any direction.

In the longterm:

In order for your body to heal, it must go through different cycles of repair. The body continues to restore itself in both new and old injuries. These are some suggestions:

  1. Sleep on your back or your side, NEVER your stomach. Your pillow should support you head and neck in its' neutral position. To lessen the stress on your low back, place a pillow under your knees (while on your back) or between your knees (while on your side).
  2. ALWAYS bend at the knees when picking anything up. When lifting, keep your back straight, hold the object close to you, and let your legs bear the strain.
  3. SIT straight in a chair making sure that your low back is supported.
  4. DON'T use the armrest of the couch as a headrest while watching T.V. or reading.
  5. DON'T use your shoulders and head to support the phone.
  6. When RISING from a lying position, turn on your side and use your arm to assist yourself into a sitting position. Swing your legs forward as the body rises.
  7. WATCH your posture - Stand tall, sit tall, sleep tall, think tall.
